Creativity is seeing what everyone else has seen, and thinking what no else has thought. And what type of engineer is the one who uses their creativity into engineering skills to design a fabric? Well, you are right, its none other than a “Textile Engineer”. We have all grown in an era where we have seen tremendous trends in fashion. Just like turning new chapters of a novel similarly fashion has evolved from fabric to fabric since ages. As rightly said,”Apparel is functional clothing, one of humanity's basic needs, but fashion incorporates its own prejudices of style, individual taste, and cultural evolution.” Thus fulfilling the basic needs of a person that is “Roti”, “Kapda”, “Makan” the manufacture, designing, dyeing and printing of a cloth is the main goal in textile industry. With the aim to acknowledge students about this astounding industry and to explore their creative side we the students of Maharaja Sayajirao University of Vadodara organize a national level technical event called FootPrints where students studying in textile engineering, textile technology, textile processing and textile chemistry from all over Gujarat can participate in our segment called Lycra. Not only specifically textile students but all those who are interested in fashion and clothing or those who have an artistic talent to showcase their creativity can also participate.

If you think good design is expensive, you should look at the cost of a bad design! Budget, innovativeness and accuracy in designing form the crux of Lycra. Here art is question to the problem and design is solution, while you work your way up to creative thinking. Under the banner name of lycra mainly 5 competitions are been held

Well you all have heard designing a particular fabric or cloth but what if I tell challenge you to design it on the spot. Yes, you heard it right!!! DIZ-O-SPOT is a designing and creativity based event. Here participants have to design on the spot based on the given theme and materials provided to them. In previous years, participants have designed mobile covers, done embroidery work, patch work on fabric etc. Since last 22 years DIZ-O-SPOT has remained one of the hot favourite segments having seen largest number of participation. This event is very exciting and surprising for participants as it test creative abilities and innovation of the product which is a must in the field of textile.

Just like alphabets are the basics of a language similarly weaving a thread into fabric is the basic knowledge a textile engineer should have. Its not only interlacement of yarns into fabric but it actually portrays emotional life of the weaver.

“I have learned that each and every piece of cloth embodies the spirit, skill and personal history of an individual weaver……. It ties together with an endless thread the emotional life of my people.”

DIZ-O-SPOT

The art of weaving is a profound metaphor for understanding the workings of the universe and our place in it. Through the physical process of weaving, we gain a better understanding of this world and how as we human beings are woven into it.

Thus making it as one of the key essential event for textile engineers BROKEN FLOATS is a fabric weaving based event. Here participants have to weave a fabric using Handloom.

Handloom fabrics are hand woven fabrics created on a  weaving device called loom. In India, handloom weaving has a long tradition of excellence and craftmanship. The tradition of weaving by hand is a part of country’s inspirational culture. Weavers are renowned for their aesthetic value, demonstrating the richness, multiplicity of our culture and artistry of the weavers. Thus, with aim to provide the basic knowledge of loom to the participants acknowledge them about the importance and experience of hand woven fabrics this event is conducted. This includes thinking, designing, assembling, weaving and decorating the sample woven on handloom.

You all might be familiar with the famous ‘Bandhani sarees’. But do you know how is it made? Well, what if I tell you that in one of our segments participants actually make them and compete. Before moving further let me explain you how a bandhani saree is made. Bandhani refers to a traditional Indian ‘tie and dye’ art, used to produce beautiful, fine circular patterns on fabric. Normally the bandhani dots are in white and yellow. In the first stage, the dots that should be white are tied to secure those areas, and the piece is then dyed in a colorful dye bath. The piece is again sent out for tying, and wherever the dots are to remain yellow, the cloth is tied. Thus based on this concept, IMPRINTS is a tie and dye event where participants and to dye and print the given fabric using their creativity. The event comprises of two rounds:-

1)   1)Tie and dye and

      2)Block printing

In tie and dye, participants have to tie and dye a given fabric using their creativity. In Block Printing, required material will be provided to the participants. Participants will have to use that material and print various designs on the given T-Shirt using printing blocks.

Tie and Dye

Here participants can showcase their innovativeness and creative artistic talent using their imagination.

Communication skills are very vital for engineers. Effective communication is a necessity to explain ideas and projects to larger audience. Effective public communication and presentation skills enable engineers to share their findings, plans and project with peers who understand technical language as well as with potential clients in business meetings. 10’s COUNT is a paper presentation event related to textile field. Here participants can enhance their speaking skills and build their inner self confidence by doing a paper presentation on any topic related to textile industry. Presentation skills are essential in our day-our-day to life and a must skill in the corporate world.

Last but not the least OUIZ-O-TEXT is a knowledge based event. The participants have to solve quizzes, puzzles, crosswords in the form of treasure hunt and solve industry defined problems related to textile department.

The glory of LYCRA is that it not only attracts students pertaining to textile department but others too. It makes you explore the hidden creative artist within you!!!
